A Tale of Two Towns - Vaison La Romaine

Saturday morning we ventured on a road trip to see the largest archeological Roman site in France.
"Vaison la Romaine" is a medieval city with two separate towns, upper and lower.

In the later half of the 12th Century the town was plundered on orders by the Count of Toulouse due to a disagreement with the Bishop.

Eventually the inhabitants abandoned the medieval town that was situated near the Cathedral and the Palace.

They sought protection high above on the rocks of the river's left bank near the Count's Castle.

Some buildings were erected in the valley alongside the Roman Bridge in 16th and 17th centuries.
In the 19th century the people migrated towards the lower town on the site of the Gallo Roman city.

We arrived early in the morning, parked in the first available lot which was near the "Notre-Dame De Nazareth" Cathedral so this was our starting point for touring the sites.

The Cathedral built in the 11th century is said to be "the most eloquent monument of the medieval and Christian town".

There are many older artifacts in the Church and architectural blocks that were re-used for the foundations.

The Cathedral Cloister dating from the 11th and 12th centuries ...

I don't know if you can see the old Roman blocks that the Church is built on ...

The Roman site of "La Villasse".

The Puymin Roman site.

A little lunch ... today Italian in France.

                       Smoked salmon penne ...

Salmon with lemon citrus sauce ...

Monsieur Honey's dessert "Tiramisu" and only one spoon!

In the main square ...

Looking up to the "Upper Town" ...

Again this is a town that you could spend many hours being a tourist ... there is so much to see and tour!

We've been pushing ourselves a bit much, more than what we normally like to do.

The number of days remaining of our "French adventure" on the calendar are quickly disappearing with our return home coming soon!

It's time for a few chill out days!

Note: the historical information was obtained from brochures provided by the tourist office.

At the Table in Bédoin!

#Bedoin#Frenchmarkets#RestaurantAtable

It's Monday again and "Market Day" in Bédoin!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the market here last week, we needed to pickup a few things and I needed a final "Market" fix before we return home plus we wanted to try the restaurant we couldn't get into last week.
Actually, there were several we could not get a table at, if you remember the restaurants were all "Complet" / full &/or had been reserved.
We arrived earlier today than last week and before any shopping we headed directly to the restaurant in hopes that we could make a reservation for lunch today!

The restaurant was not open (sign in window "fermé" ... opening at 11:45A.M) the door however was open and I sent a greeting through the entrance of "Bonjour! Bonjour!" ... eventually the chef/owner came out of the kitchen.
After some pleasantries, I asked to reserve a table for two for today's lunchtime. I explained that we had tried to eat here the previous week.
The chef was very friendly and took the reservation.

When we arrived at 12:30 PM, again all the tables had reserved signs on them ... we were happy that we had made the reservation.

More about our lunch later ... First another quick market tour!

Sweet, juicy watermelons...

Local fresh "Strawberry" season ...

Free enterprise ... a table setup to sell local cherries in this gentleman's driveway!

Oh yes please ... Let's get a "pain aux raisin et une croissant" and find a café!

This first time in the six weeks we've been away, we enjoyed a little indulgence for breakfast ... love it!

Olive oils and tapenades ...

Every flavour of vinegar ... all natural.

We even ran into an old friend ... Miss "Happy, Happy", remember her from the shop in Tossa de Mar?

Pretty pink peonies ... just gorgeous!

My challenge is to find out what this plant is and see if we can grow it in our garden ...

    Time for lunch ...

The view from our table ... beautiful white oleander overlooking the square.

We were offered two options for our lunch from the "Menu du Jour or the Menu du Mois" boards and we were able to interchange. We enjoyed a three course lunch with a glass of wine and coffee included.

Starter ... Creamy cauliflower soup with shrimp.

Main course ... Chicken supreme served on top of basmati rice with a zucchini galette.

The pièce de résistance... Our dessert - a short bread type of cake with cherries, and the spoon was also made from the pastry. Delicious!
