Annie Lennox Goes to Market

Wednesday, September 11th, 2019

It’s Market Day in Saint-remy de Provence!

Market day shopping is a favourite thing for me to do while travelling in Europe.

Markets are full of life.

Unfortunately for me ... I was late out of the gate this morning.
I sent my three travelling partners on ahead.
They arrived back home with their fresh fruit, vegetable and rotisserie chicken haul.
I was now ready to join them, we visited the dry goods, wares and anything Provençal in linens, decor, plants, etc.
This market is impressive.

Anything and everything lavender ...
Shopping bags and pottery ...
Madame Susan and I could have used these last night while cooking ...
Checking out some French linens

Beautiful items made of Olive wood ...

A « chapeau «  for everyone ...
And cork items from Spain and Portugal not from France ...   interesting tidbit we received from the vendor, the cork in France is too thin & fragile to be used.

Herbs for sale ...

Fresh cut flowers

The church bells had rung announcing that it was 12 noon ... we wandered a little longer.

Why not here for lunch?
We settled on L’Olivade
The plat du jour was chosen and turned out to be a delicious dish of pork with a wine shallot sauce served atop mashed potatoes, roasted white turnips, squash, spinach & fresh herbs.

Plat du Jour ...
We then wandered back around the ring road heading home for a siesta ... first a stop here for an ice cream!

Most definitely a siesta was now needed ...

Just a Pretty courtyard around the corner from Mas D’Oscar.

Market Day in Céret

Saturday, May 11th-2019
Today our road trip is taking us to the “Deep South” of France to share the Céret market experience with Jennifer.
Céret is probably one of our most favourite spots with plane tree lined streets and it has just enough going on in the town with a good café /restaurant scene, many local shops plus larger grocery stores and of course there is the fantastic Saturday market that winds all the way around the centre of town.

Céret is located at the foothills of the Pyrenees, very close to Spain ... in fact, today as we exited from the auto route, the built in GPS took us thru Spain and then back into Céret.
Not sure if we missed something but when we returned back to Montlaur the Gendarmerie had our usual road closed off.
Who knows ... maybe the GPS satellite knew the road was closed.
Even with an early start, we arrived later than anticipated due to the detour through Spain ... Jennifer can say she also went to Spain! Haha!

Remember this place ... overlooking Place de la Liberté with stunning views over the tiled roofs and mountains.
We stayed at this apartment on three separate occasions.

Here’s a memory from 4 years ago ... Monsieur Honey snuck out to buy me some flowers!

The market was as busy as always even with the threat of rain.
This vendor was hoping to cash in on the weather ... selling “parapluies”.
Luckily we didn’t need one! It only rained when we were inside.

We wandered, checking out the various vendors selling their products and wares.

And of course it was cherry season ... a must buy!
They were juicy and sweet!
And every year the last weekend in May, there is a Cherry Festival.

We had hoped to eat alfresco in the “Place des Neuf Jets” but the weather man or was it Mother Nature had other plans, neither of whom were cooperating.
The sky was dark and threatening rain.
We had reserved a table at Quattrocento where we enjoyed a delicious lunch  « a l’intérieur «.

A little more strolling after lunch to be able see without the market stalls set up.

Picasso’s fountain ...

A street view with the giant plane trees ...

We discovered some “street art” paintings on walls ... I didn't know anything about these previously, after some searching I found an article from November 2017  in the P-O Life magazine.

Here’s an excerpt ... New Faces in Cerét by written Elaine Koerner.

The artist behind the faces prefers to be known only as FAS.
“I am very proud of our artistic history,” explains FAS, who lives in Céret with his family.
“I decided to create these portraits in tribute to a handful of the many painters and other artists who either were locals or else were drawn to Céret’s charms as visitors. My portraits include both well-known and lesser-known painters.”

His portrait project got started more than a year ago after he received a thumbs up from the Mairie.

There is suppose to be six to nine of these throughout the town. If interested you can read the whole article online.

The beautiful bottle brush plant ...

And one last stop at Bar Pablo before leaving town ...

À bientôt Céret!

It’s “Le Weekend” in Ceret, France

It’s Saturday morning (Sept. 23/17) and you know what that means for us when we’re in France ... it’s Market Day!
It’s a bit of an overcast morning and later in September than when we normally visit this area of France.
We are not quite sure what to expect. Will there be fewer vendors, less shoppers? Looking out from our windows the section of the market in Place de la Liberté it is full house so I’m guessing we won’t be disappointed as we venture throughout the town checking out the market stalls.
Town has been relatively quiet since we arrived on Tuesday.

As you can see in the photo below ... the town is busy with many, many people looking, socializing and shopping at the various market stalls. We found many delicious, fresh goodies and were spoiled for choice.
I can’t wait for our local Farmers Market to be in full swing later this Spring.

And that’s a wrap for today’s market, the vendors have packed up and the commune workers are hard at work cleaning the streets,

Sunday we enjoyed an alfresco lunch at La Quattrocento in the Place des Neuf Jets on a sunny day.
A shared, scrumptious pizza, salad, some cold Rosé and a crémé Catalan with two spoons.

Then it was time for a Sunday afternoon stroll around town and today we visited the Saint Pierre Church.
Saint Peter’s is a Roman Catholic church. Believed to been first built in 814.
The church was built and rebuilt several times from the 11th to the 18th centuries.
In 1998 the building was declared a national historical monument.
The Church is located in the narrow, back streets of the center of Cerét within its own square surrounded by beautiful olive trees.

The water was running in the fountain today! We wandered back to the apartment and enjoyed the late sunshine from the balcony.

The blue, blue skies ...

That’s a wrap for this weekend in Cerét.

The Spicy Colours of Market Day

#MarketDay#Olonzac

A day at the Market is a pleasure for all your senses ...

Visually there are many colours,  plenty of sounds of the market vendors and shoppers  interacting, the wonderful aromas of the fresh baked goods, fresh fruits and vegetables and the spices plus the fragrance from the soaps and lavender.

Many of the stall vendors offer free samples of their products ... cured sausages, fresh apricots, wines, tapenades, cheeses and olives are just a few examples of today's offers ... which will satisfy your tastes.

Don't forget the sense of touch ... there are luxurious fabrics used in the many items from aprons to bedding to tablecloths.

Normally by this time in our adventure ... we are "Marketed" out!

In other words we have been to too many ... but this year's adventure did not provide much time or opportunity to do the "Market" circuit.

Today, I got my "Market" fix ...

Today's market was a large one with many vendors ... farmers, traders and artisans and the village's population swelled as many visitors come from neighbouring towns and villages.

We came home with a basket full of fresh vegetables, sweet & juicy melons, bread, sausages and a sweet dessert treat ... plus I found a deal on an amazing jacquard woven tablecloth.
(Made in France).

Happy! Happy!
