Friendships Around the World

#friendships#Ceret#Maureillas-las-Illas

Thursday September 26th, 2019

Today was another slow day which when you are travelling are great because it gives you a chance to catch your breath and reflect on your surroundings / experiences.

Madame Susan & Monsieur Mark opted to walk the cork forest trail from the opposite direction today.
Madame Susan says she remembers thinking that our landlady, Hazel was right to start from where she did the other day when she accompanied them.
My interpretation/ translation : it was a more challenging, difficult walk today!

Monsieur Honey & I wandered in the village with a couple of quick pickups at the boulangerie for a freshly baked baguette and a stop at the Spar for some lunch items.

On our way back we had a cafe sit at the local bar/ restaurant “El Tap” in the square for some people watching while listening to the soft splashing of water in the fountain.

Such blue, blue skies ...

Back at our home away from home with our shopping ...

”Nos amies” returned from their walk and we enjoyed our alfresco lunch in the lower garden under the shade of the lychee tree.

It was another beautiful, sunny day!
The Monsieurs had a wander in the back yard ...

Only thing on our calendar today was a rendezvous with our Kiwi friends who split their time between Nelson, New Zealand and Céret, France.

We met Karen and John at le Comptoir des Arcades for drinks and a catch up!
We missed seeing them the previous year (as our 2018 European travels only took us to Spain).
We shared a pleasant couple of hours of friendship.

The sun was shining brightly, so much so that hats were shared.
The magical light was magnificent!

We drove back to Maureillas-las-Illas from Céret along the mottled coloured plane tree lined road.

When we arrived home, Madame Susan and Monsieur Mark we’re enjoying the early evening on the terrace ... we joined them for some chatter and planning for tomorrow ... our last day in France.

Ceret Encore!

For the last couple of days of Madame Susan and Monsieur Mark’s adventure, we left it up to them to choose how active/ busy they wanted to be.

It was decided it was time to wind down a bit and we really hadn’t spent that much time in the area of Céret and Maureillas-las-Illas.

Wednesday (25th September 2019) we headed into Céret for just a wander, a supply pickup (wine) and some lunch.

We arrived mid morning.
It was an overcast day with heavy clouds, the rain held off and the temperatures remained warm.

This is still a favourite view taken from the Ciel Bleu apartment balcony overlooking Place de la Liberte (September 2017).

Céret is known as the “Mecca of Cubism”.
Throughout the town you will find reproduction panels of paintings by famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andre Masson, Chaim Soutine, Juan Gris and many more.
These panels are placed in locations where a view was painted by the artist ... so you can see the painting and the actual view. I believe there are 20 of these throughout the town.

This is a reproduction of “Les Platanes a Céret, Place de la Liberté 1920” by Chaim Soutine, English translation “the Plane Trees in Céret.

We wandered throughout the town, checking out various shops and sights.

It might have been laundry day for some ...

Then it soon became the obligatory hour for “dejeuner” ... lunch.
No alfresco lunch today.
It was warm enough but the clouds looked heavy with rain so we opted for an inside table at Quattrocento.
A delicious lunch and wine was enjoyed.

Our starter ....

After lunch we each ventured on our own ... for us it was a memory walk and for Madame Susan and Monsieur Mark a time for them to explore on their own.
Of course, Monsieur Honey needed to stop in at the Brocante.
Here we saw a depiction of the Place des Neuf Jets (the square where we had just had lunch).

Some street art in Ceret

We rendezvoused at Bar Pablo for an apero before heading back to Maureillas-las-Illas

Our last stop of the day was the supermarket for some of Madame Susan’s favourite in France ...
on our shopping list today.

I’ll be back soon, for now I’m going to go enjoy the sunshine and sea air in Florida ... I’ve promised myself to finish the posts!

The Colours and Light of Collioure

#collioure#southoffrance#thegoodlifefrance#travellers#fishingport#matisse

Tuesday, September 24, 2019

Time is flying by ... we have three weeks with our dear friends Madame Susan and Monsieur Mark in France.
We are into week number 3.
You always think you have lots of time but it goes so quickly.

Today it’s “Collioure” ... it was a must on our itinerary.
You can’t be this close and not visit .

In 2003 on our very first trip to France, Monsieur Honey & I first discovered Collioure by accident.
We were travelling for a month on a 10-day Eurail Pass that was good for 30 days in any 3 adjoining countries.
As our guide, we had a copy of Rick Steves’ 2001 book about France, Belgium and the Netherlands ... after our travels in France we were heading to Belgium for 10 days so Monsieur could become familiar with my family roots.

As we were waiting at the Arles train station to catch a TGV (the fast train) to Bordeaux  (don’t ask where we had come from ... my memory is good but not that good, and my photos from that time are on SD cards / memory sticks, not as easy to access as «my photos» in the cloud); Monsieur was checking out the departures and saw that the next train out was to Collioure.
This train was leaving an hour earlier than the TGV to Bordeaux.
We had never heard of or knew anything about Collioure.
He quickly checked the guide book and Rick Steves’ description convinced us that we should head there ... to the Mediterranean coast.
Rick Steve’s comments stated everyone needs to take a vacation from their vacation ... and Collioure is the place.

“Henri Matisse arrived in Collioure in May 1905 at the age of 36, depressed, full of self doubts and very short of money. As soon as he got off the train he was struck by the vitality of the little Catalan fishing port. His depression lifted.” *

I believe once you’ve visited Collioure,  you will see that the vivid colours and luminous light can cure many ailments.

It was love at first sight on our first visit with this town when we first met over sixteen years ago and we are still enamoured.
It was here in September 2003 (it was the year of the severe heat wave) that my younger self first dipped my toe in the cooling waters of the Mediterranean!

It is a picture - postcard town with pastel, coloured fishermen cottages, unique boutiques, art galleries and many restaurants /cafes  lining the narrow cobble stoned streets that change colour with the magnificent Mediterranean light.
Our first stop was a drink at the sea front.
We then parted ways leaving each couple to wander throughout Collioure.
We agreed upon a time & place to rendezvous.

We had a perfect weather day for our wanderings in Collioure, so much so that Monsieur Honey was dancing in the streets.

Here  you can see the beautiful pastel colours ...

Soon it was time for some lunch ; Monsieur Honey and I found a a little wine/tapas café « Chez Syl Vins » with views of the Royal Chateau.

We were enjoying our glass of rosé and cheese/charcuterie platter when we spotted Madame Susan and Monsieur Mark in the distance sitting on a shaded bench by the Chateau enjoying their picnic.
Can you see them?

Only thing missing from their sumptuous repas was «  un verre de rose »  ... we quickly remedied that.
We asked Sylvain for some traveller glasses and I delivered them each a glass of rosé to enjoy with their picnic.
Madame Susan messaged me when I told her I was writing the post about our day in Collioure she wrote ...
“Don't forget to talk about waiting on us hand and foot!” ... it was our pleasure and so easy to do for appreciative friends!

A neat cork stool at the café ...

The Ancient Mairie ... the Old Townhall

Back at our home away from home in Maureillas-las-Illas ... for an evening of great company, great wine and great views from the upper terrace.

Come back soon ... I’m still catching up with my posts.
