Sentimental Journey

"Gonna take a sentimental journey. Gonna set my heart at ease.
Gonna make a sentimental journey. To renew old memories."
...can you hear Ringo Starr singing these lyrics?

"She glances at the photo and the pilot light of memory flickers in her eyes."~ Frank Deford

Our souvenirs allow us to take a sentimental journey and remember our past travels.

Definition of souvenir (noun)...stems from the French word "souvenir" for a remembrance or memory, an item of sentimental value, to remember an event or location, sometimes a cheaply made item sold for a high price.

Shopping for souvenirs can sometimes be a big event while travelling.

Our caché of souvenirs does not include the usual suspects of knick-knacks, bric à-brac, kitsch or whatever you want to call these type of items.

It is easy to be tempted by vendors selling their wares in the colourful tourist shoppes and market stalls which usually includes the typical shot glasses, tea towels, printed with the name of the location, etc. only to be disappointed when the label reads..MADE IN China and you are visiting Japan as an example.

We always strive to buy something that is made and originates from the place we are visiting and has a special meaning, is useful and will rekindle our memories of our travels.

Our treasures include our collection of photographs, some wonderful pieces of original art that decorate the walls of our home, fabric for a table cloth, woven jacquard throws, CDs with special music, some delectable food items ... olive oils, balsamic vinegars, Herbes de Provence, tins of foie gras and of course any thing lavender and plus some special bottles of wine.

Monsieur "Honey" collects bronze sculptures and is affectionate about anything antique.

If he is aware of a vide-grenier or brocante, it will be on his must-see and to do list.
He has acquired some unusual and beautiful objets d'art.

Here are a few photos of some of our special souvenirs and each has it's own story.

The owners of the "Appartement Molière" in Pezenas were both talented artists, Karen a painter and Gerard a sculptor.... these Mini Cards were designed and painted by Karen Garcia, and eventually I found the perfect frame to display them..

The bronze polar bear bought at the brocante in Agde, and the marble slab found in Caunes-Minervois ....memories of our 2005 travels in France.

Our prints from Collioure 2012.

There's a "Polar Bear" joining us for aperitifs in Agde.

Soon...More Postcards from the Lot

As in the words of Norah Jones' song ... "Come Away With Me", follow us via our blog as we have another Rendezvous with France.

Our experience in France last year was so remarkable and exceeded all of our expectations, that it wasn't long after we returned that plans for our 2013 adventure were in the works.

Accommodations, flights and car rental have all been arranged and finalized.

This year we have rented a charming 17th Century Barn that has been lovingly converted into a cottage located in a small village near Gourdon (where our home base was in 2012) in the Lot Valley.

Our mode of transport will be via a Peugeot 207 (or similar) for the duration of our stay.

We will again fly with Air France from Toronto to Toulouse via Paris; service is great and we say goodbye to our bags in Toronto and they are in Toulouse when we arrive.

Of course our passports are up to date...so we are ready to go and immerse ourselves full throttle with all our senses into the French lifestyle.

Now it's just the packing and the unpacking as we decide what to take and then what we really need to take or more accurately what we don't need to take.

Stay tuned for more updates about our Rendezvous.

Upon returning from our last trip, I made a " Shutterfly " photo book that captures some of our special memories and postcards.

This painting hangs in our dining room, and was our souvenir purchase in 2003 during our very first vacation in France.
It is titled " Le Rendezvous ".
Some of our grandchildren think this is Grandma and Grandpa...oh to see the world through childrens' eyes!

Test Post using iPad

We've purchased a new iPad and I'm testing it to see if blogging will be as easy as it was with my trusted "Red Notebook".

"Red" was a recycled, reused, repurposed mini computer that my son, Stephen lent me before we went on our last adventure to France.

Familiarity is a comfortable feeling. I have a special attachment to "Red" because I know how it works ...and this is even more important as you age.

With an open mind and an "iPad for Dummies" book, I'm hopeful that this little machine will become just as familiar and as "Red".

Here's a photo of "Red'.
